First Night Pittsburgh, NYE fireworks, packages and celebrationsfor new year 2020-2021
Update: First Night Pittsburgh this year goes ahead as a onehour, TV only event. There will be music and fireworks, but nopublic gathering or in-person attendance.
First Night Pittsburgh, sponsored by Highmark, is a new year partyon a grand scale that draws huge crowds to the downtown area for anevening of music, dancing, live entertainment and of course fireworks!
This isn't the only option for a new year party though, with manyhotels, bars and restaurants across the city also hosting their owntop NYE celebrations to give you plenty of choices.
Highmark First Night
The main event is the Highmark sponsored First Night Pittsburgh celebration,a range of events centred around the downtown Cultural District andfeaturing live performances, plentiful food and drink options and ofcourse the fireworks display, which forms the climax of the Countdownto midnight, which also includes the raising of a 1000 pound Futureof Pittsburgh ball 150 feet above Penn Avenue Place and fireworks providedby Zambelli.
The event starts at 6pm and you do need to buy 'buttons'which act as passes to most of the attractions. Youcan buy your First Night buttons online from the 3rd Decemberhere.
One of the main features is the FedEx Ground Parade, starting at8pm at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and travelling down PennAvenue, whwere there are great viewing spots on either side of the street.The parade includes various performance groups with plenty of surprisesplanned as well.
For those with younger children who may not be willing or able tostay up until the climax of the main party at midnight Penn Avenue Placeis the place to head for, where the Dollar bank Children's Fireworksdisplay gets the whole event underway from 6.00pm.
Special events on new years eve also take place at the Fire &Ice plaza located at Penn Avenue and 8th Street, where an Ice Creationsevent will be held, including ice carving, fire dancers, jugglers anda 10.30pm fireworks finale.
Gateway Clipper NYE Cruises
With a setting at the conjunction of 3 different rivers - the Ohio,the Monongahela river and the Allegheny - then as you would expect thereare water-based choices for the new year here too.
